Neil Lennon has emerged as the new favourite to be the next Crystal Palace manager after Tim Sherwood followed Malky Mackay in being ruled out of the running.

Sky Bet have installed Lennon at the head of the market after Sky Sports News HQ presenter Jim White revealed that, having spoken personally with Sherwood, the Palace job was "not the right fit" for him currently.

Palace had looked set to appoint Mackay until it emerged he and former head of recruitment Iain Moody were implicated in a damning dossier submitted by Cardiff to the Football Association, accusing the duo of being racist, sexist and homophobic in a series of text messages during their time together at the club.

Lennon is now considered the most likely fit for the post at 5/6 and is currently without a club, having left Celtic in May after four years at Parkhead, leading them to three successive titles, two Scottish Cup triumphs and a place in the Champions League group stages in their last two campaigns.

Caretaker boss Keith Millen takes charge of the Eagles again as they host West Ham on Saturday and is considered 8/1 to get the job on a permanent basis.

Steve Clarke is second in the betting at 7/2 while Tony Pulis has remarkably emerged as a shock third favourite at 6/1 following a run of bets on Friday, despite leaving the club shortly before the start of the season.

Sky Bet Football Trader Jamie Munro said: “Neil Lennon is our new favourite after he was backed in following the news that Tim Sherwood is not interested in the post, but the interest in him has actually dried up since we shortened the price.

“We were surprised to see money on Pulis for the post but have still had to shorten his price, while nobody else is really proving popular in the market.”
