Steve Bruce could offer no excuses for the poor performance of his Hull team in their 1-0 defeat to Swansea.

The home side started the game without mainstays Tom Huddlestone and Michael Dawson through suspension and injury respectively, but their manager refused to blame the loss on their absences.

Visiting Swansea had also made changes – seven from their defeat at Tottenham last time out – but took a 14th-minute through Ki Sung-yueng and Bruce said his players were poor throughout the second half.

Bruce said: “There are no excuses for that performance.

"At the end of the day there was nothing in it in the first half. If anything, we might have edged it. They get a deflected goal that sends us backwards, but in the second half, we weren’t good enough in all areas of the pitch.

Paul Merson was left uninspired by Hull's performance in their 1-0 defeat to Swansea

“We can’t make any excuses. In the second half in particular, we were really missing out big players, today we’ve had too many of our big players unavailable.

“It’s fair to say we’ve lost confidence. When you’re in a horrible run, you have to find a bit of form. Unfortunately the more we tried, the worse we got. Confidence is a huge thing in football; it needs a result and it needs a victory.

"Hopefully we’ll get some people back fit and from suspension but I’ll be honest with you, we’ve got to do better than we did today.
