Iain Wright, Labour MP for Hartlepool and season ticket holder at the club, has suggested Ronnie Moore would be wrong to sign Ched Evans

Labour MP Iain Wright has told Hartlepool to "think again" after manager Ronnie Moore admitted interest in signing convicted rapist Ched Evans.

The Pools boss confirmed on Saturday his interest Evans, who was released from prison in October after serving half of a five-year sentence, and insisted he “would like it to happen” if possible.

Evans, 25, was due to train with former club Sheffield United last month but the club retracted their offer after considerable public outrage at the idea and threats from patrons to withdraw their support.

And Wright, who is MP for Hartlepool and a season-ticket holder, told Sky Sports News HQ: “I don’t want Hartlepool to sign Ched Evans.

The Sunday Supplement panel discuss wheather Hartlepool should sign convicted rapist Ched Evans.

“It sends entirely the wrong message and I actually think it undermines the future success of our club. We’re bottom of the league and in dire need of a goalscorer but hiring a convicted rapist to play for Pools is wrong and the club should think again.

“Rehabilitation is a really important part of our judicial system and we absolutely need it, but the combination of professional football, the high profile of it, and this particular crime and its rate, sends out a terrible message.

“He could be a role model and a hero to so many fans and the idea that heroes are rapists is wrong and we should stamp that out as soon as possible.”

Pools boss Moore took charge of the troubled League Two side last week and clinched a 1-1 draw with Oxford in his first game in charge on Saturday.
