Newcastle v Sunderland: Defeat hurts, says Alan Pardew

Defeat by Sunderland hurts - Pardew

Alan Pardew said he was hurt at becoming the first Newcastle manager to lose four successive Tyne-Wear derbies after a 1-0 defeat by Sunderland.

The Black Cats recorded their third win on the trot at St James' Park, on Sunday, with Adam Johnson grabbing the winner in the 90th minute.

"Losing four in a row is a tag that is going to stick on me," said Pardew.

"It's another defeat to Sunderland and it hurts. We should be sitting here as winners but we have lost."

Newcastle had chances to win the match in the second half, with striker Ayoze Perez forcing Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon into making two good saves, while substitute Adam Armstrong also went close with a strike.

"I am proud of how the team approached the game . It wasn't our day," added Pardew, who also praised his 21-year-old goalkeeper Jak Alnwick for standing up "to enormous pressure" in only his fourth senior game, with Tim Krul and Rob Elliot out injured.

Newcastle's next match is at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, as they look to avoid a fourth successive loss in all competitions and Pardew said: "We have to regroup and take our second-half form into the game against Manchester United."
