Carlton Cole has failed to score in seven England appearances

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been charged by the Football Association for a comment he posted on social media.

The 31-year-old directed an expletive-laden response towards a Tottenham fan following a 2-2 Premier League draw between the sides on 22 February.

An FA statementexternal-link said: "It is alleged that the comment was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or brings the game into disrepute."

Former England forward Cole has until 18:00 GMT on 5 March to respond.

Cole has made 17 appearances for the Hammers this season and scored three goals.

He was fined £20,000 by the Football Association for comments he made on Twitter during England's friendly with Ghana in April 2011.
