Patrick Bamford named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year

Patrick Bamford has been named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year at a lavish Football League awards ceremony in central London.

Bamford, who is on loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea, received the accolade on Sunday night.

The 21-year-old has been in prolific form for the Teessiders this season with 17 goals in 37 games and has a conversion rate of over 20 per cent. He has also created 26 chances for his team-mates.

The League One Player of the Year Award went to Joe Garner.

The Preston striker has scored 21 goals in 34 games so far this season and also won Football League goal of the year with his sublime effort in the first leg of North End's semi-final play-off tie against Rotherham almost 12 months ago. 

Bury's Danny Mayor won the League Two Player of the Year award after scoring eight goals this season while Dele Alli, back on loan at MK Dons after signing for Tottenham in January, won the League's Young Player of the Year award.

The midfielder, who will hope to force his way into Mauricio Pochettino's plans in the summer, has scored 16 goals from midfield for the League One promotion-chasers.

Leicester City coach Kevin Phillips received the "Sir Tom Finney" Award.

The award is presented to a player who has had an outstanding career in league competitions, and was renamed permanently in honour of the Preston and England legend following his death in 2014.

Phillips retired as a player at the end of last season after scoring 272 goals in 660 senior appearances in a glittering career which took in spells at Watford, Sunderland, Southampton, West Brom, Blackpool, Birmingham and Crystal Palace below the top flight.
