Sky sources understand John Carver did not offer to step down from his role as Newcastle interim manager on Monday, contrary to reports.

Carver met with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley and senior players at the club’s training ground on Monday amid reports of uncertainty after Newcastle lost 3-0 at Leicester over the weekend.

But it is understood that Carver did not offer to resign during the meeting, nor was he asked to step aside.

Reports had surfaced claiming Newcastle were prepared to make an immediate move to bring in Derby manager Steve McClaren to try and stave off the threat of relegation.

But a separate source has told us that McClaren will not be joining Newcastle any time soon and looks set be staying at Derby next season.

Saturday’s defeat to Leicester was Newcastle’s eighth in succession, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone with a goal difference inferior to four of the five teams below them.

Newcastle’s run-in sees them travel to relegation rivals QPR, either side of home games against West Brom and West Ham.

Carver was placed in temporary charge of Newcastle following Alan Pardew’s departure for Crystal Palace in January and has expressed his interest in taking the job on a permanent basis.
