David Beckham leads tributes to England Women after historic win

England made history on Saturday night by reaching the Women’s World Cup semi-finals for the first time and David Beckham was among a host of stars to take to social media to offer congratulations.

Goals from Jodie Taylor and Lucy Bronze gave England a 2-1 win over hosts Canada in front of a partisan Vancouver crowd and sent them through to a semi-final showdown with Japan.

England Women’s head coach Mark Sampson was quick to point out the scale of the achievement as he congratulated his team on Twitter.

“Congratulations to my team you have made a Nation proud 1966,1990... now add @england Women 2015 #Lionesses” – Sampson wrote.

Sampson was not alone in using social media to hail the Lionesses as he was joined by men and women from across the sporting world.

“Girls what a performance .. We are so proud of what you have achieved and the passion you have shown gives us so much pride.... Our lionesses roar into the semi's GB @england” – Former England captain David Beckham.

“England women doing the country proud. Huge congratulations on reaching the semi finals.” – Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney.
