Davis' header delighted Rory McIlroy in the stands

Steven Davis put away a superb header from range for Northern Ireland against Greece, and his fellow countryman Rory McIlroy showed his delight from the stands.

The Irish sealed qualification for their first major tournament since 1986 and their first ever European Championship with a 3-1 victory at Windsor Park on Thursday.

McIlroy is not taking part in the British Masters supported by Sky Sports at Woburn this week due to an ankle injury picked up in July, but Davis' goal certainly brought a smile to the four-time major winner's face.

The golfer, who was at the match with IBF superbantamweight champion Carl Frampton, later tweeted: "Anyone for France next year? #EURO 2016" alongside a picture of his view at Windsor Park.

He added: "Unbelievable result for the republic too! Great night for the island of Ireland, north and south. Hopefully see both teams in France next yr."
