Gillingham closed the gap on League One leaders Coventry to one point after a 2-0 win over Rochdale.
Bradley Dack's right-footed effort on seven minutes and Adedeji Oshilaja's late strike saw the Gills bounce back to winning ways following the 4-1 defeat by Coventry on Saturday.
Coventry were less impressive on their return to action, though, as they were held to a 0-0 draw away at play-off chasing Bradford, who moved into the top six courtesy of Bury's 2-1 home loss against Scunthorpe.
Burton remain hot on the heels of the top two following an impressive 1-0 win at fellow promotion hopefuls Wigan. The Brewers snatched all three points when Abdenasser El Khayati fired home with just 13 minutes remaining.
New signing Miles Addison made an eventful entrance as Peterborough scraped a 3-2 success over 10-man Barnsley.
Defender Addison, who signed a short-term deal earlier in the day, conceded a penalty and headed a goal as Graham Westley's men closed in on the play-off places, while the Tykes had Kevin Long sent off.
At the other end of the table, Crewe remained rooted at the bottom despite fighting back to earn a dramatic 3-2 win away at Colchester.
Callum Harriott and George Moncur's goals either side of the break put Colchester in control, before second-half strikes from Ryan Colclough and Marcus Haber got the Railwaymen back on track.
Striker Ryan Lowe, who re-signed for Crewe on loan from Bury on Monday, then stepped off the bench to score in the final minute and complete the turnaround.
Oldham plunged into the drop zone after a crushing 5-2 home defeat against Southend and they took the place of Swindon who beat fourth-placed Walsall 2-1 thanks to Louis Thompson's last-gasp winner at the County Ground.
Shrewsbury pulled off a shock to beat Sheffield United 4-2 at Bramall Lane to keep themselves above the relegation zone.
The Blades struck first through Conor Sammon, but three goals in 10 minutes from Sullay Kaikai, Ian Black and Scott Vernon turned the game on its head before the break.
James Collins added a fourth for Shrewsbury three minutes after half-time, before Dean Hammond grabbed a consolation for the hosts just after the hour mark.
Elsewhere, Doncaster beat Chesterfield 3-0, Port Vale were 2-0 winners over struggling Blackpool and Fleetwood edged out Millwall 2-1 at Highbury Stadium.
