World Cup-winning defender Benedikt Howedes has committed his future to German club Schalke 04.

Howedes, who graduated from the youth set-up at the Bundesliga side after joining in 2001, has signed a three-year deal which keeps him at Gelsenkirchen until the summer of 2019.

"I have said it before that I will play for no other club in the Bundesliga," said the 28-year-old, who has made over 200 appearances for the club. "I will defend those words on and off the pitch.

"My heart was thumping when I put pen to paper. Schalke 04 is a great club with amazing fans, a club I am thankful to for developing me as a youth player in the Knappenschmiede academy.

"They gave me the opportunity to make my breakthrough in the Bundesliga as a youngster and handing me the role of captain early on. We have a young team full of potential and ambition and I want to continue shaping its future."
