The Dutchman left United's team hotel in London on Sunday following Saturday's FA Cup triumph over Crystal Palace, telling Sky Sports News HQ's reporter "it's over" after reports surfaced at the weekend that Jose Mourinho is poised to succeed him at Old Trafford.

United insisted Van Gaal's comments were referring purely to the season being "over" - not his reign as United boss - but Sky sources understand Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes will fly into the UK on Tuesday for talks.

Van Gaal himself was reported in some of Monday's newspapers to be preparing for a holiday in Portugal, but he gave reporters a wave as he drove into the training complex just before 9am.
