An excellent free-kick from Jonjo Shelvey sealed a 2-0 win for Newcastle against Brighton in the Championship

Jonjo Shelvey opened his Newcastle account in style with a free-kick in their 2-0 win over Brighton on Saturday.

The midfielder curled the ball around the right-hand side of the wall from 25 yards out, leaving Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale glued to the spot as he netted for the first time since joining the Magpies in January.

Jamal Lascelles' header gave Newcastle the lead after 15 minutes in a scrappy first half at St James', with Brighton offering little attacking threat.

Sam Baldock's dismissal nine minutes into the second half aided the hosts' cause, before Shelvey's 63rd-minute free-kick sealed three points for his side.

Shelvey almost added another just moments later when he hit a low left-footed shot across goal which looked destined for the bottom corner, but a crucial fingertip save from Stockdale denied him.

Hughton's men created some late chances, but failed to find the back of the net as Newcastle's momentum gathered further pace.
