New York City missed the chance to regain pole position in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference on Saturday night, drawing 2-2 with FC Dallas.

Thomas McNamara gave City a 14th minute lead at Yankee Stadium but Maximiliano Urruti (28) and Michael Barrios (54) turned things around for Western Conference leaders Dallas, only for Khiry Shelton to head an equaliser 12 minutes from time.

Both teams came close to a winner in the closing stages - with City goalkeeper Josh Saunders turning an effort from Dallas substitute Tesho Akindele onto a post before Stiven Mendoza fired wide at the other end soon after.

There was concern for NYC FC midfielder Frank Lampard, who limped out of the game in the first half with a calf injury.

Coach Patrick Vieira didn't immediately know the severity of the injury.

"He's a sensible professional," Vieira said. "He came out because he didn't want to make it worse. We will wait and see how bad it is."

The result leaves City a point behind leaders Toronto FC, who have two games in hand ahead of Sunday's contest against third-placed New York Red Bulls.
