Portland had taken an early lead at the Columbus Crew Stadium after four minutes through Dairon Asprilla, before the home side hit back with two quick goals from Justin Meram and Ola Kamara.

Fanendo Adi then levelled the game again for Portland, and proceedings appeared to be heading for a draw until Niko Hansen's 84th-minute winner.

New England Revolution got their first win of the new season as they thumped Minnesota United 5-2.

Juan Agudelo's early goal at the Gillette Stadium was quickly cancelled out by Collen Warner for Minnesota, before the home side moved into an unassailable position at half-time with goals from Kei Kamara, a Lee Nguyen penalty and Agudelo's second.

Brent Kallman then pulled one back for Minnesota, before Chris Tierney's penalty after 53 minutes sealed the game for Revolution.

New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake played out a goalless draw at the Red Bull Arena.
