Tottenham say Erik Lamela needs surgery on his hip and will be out for the rest of the season

Tottenham have confirmed that Erik Lamela has to undergo surgery on his hip and will be out for the rest of the season.

The Argentine has not played for Spurs since an appearance in the EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool on October 25 last year.

Now Tottenham have confirmed that the midfielder will not return to action until next season but did not give an exact time frame on his return to action.

"Erik Lamela is to undergo surgery on his hip on Saturday. This will result in Erik returning to action next season," a Tottenham statement said on Twitter.

"The Argentina international has undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation process following the injury in November.

"The player has achieve​d a good level of function, however he has been unable to reach the stage required to make a full return to training.
