Barcelona are in talks to sign former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho from Guangzhou Evergrande, Sky sources understand.

Paulinho has a £35m release clause in his contract with the Chinese Super League side, but Barcelona are reportedly unwilling to pay that much for the 28-year-old.

Any potential move is further complicated by the fact that Guangzhou will have to pay a new 100 per cent tax if they sign a foreign replacement for Paulinho.

Tottenham sold Paulinho to Guangzhou for £10m in June 2015 after he played 45 Premier League games across two seasons.

He has won the title in both his seasons in China and his side is currently four points clear at the top of the Chinese Super League table.

The Chinese mid-season window opened last Monday and closes on July 14.
