Florian Lejeune: Newcastle United sign ex-Manchester City defender
Last updated on .From the section Football
Newcastle United have signed defender Florian Lejeune from Eibar on a five-year deal for a reported £8.7m.
The 26-year-old, who joined Manchester City in 2015 but did not play a game, is the Magpies' second summer signing after winger Christian Atsu.
Former France youth international Lejeune has also had spells at Girona and Villarreal.
"When you have a manager like Rafa Benitez who wants you, you are very happy to come," he said.
Benitez added: "If he settles well into English football then I am sure he will be a success and will give us a lot of competition in this area."

Our manager turned down Sunderland. Must be a bad place if you turn down 3 times your salary. Nevertheless I'm delighted he's staying. Too good for Sunderland.
"If you are accessing content for free such as sport...this is illegal"
I hope my watching illegal football streams isn't having a detrimental affect on Wayne Rooney's £360,000 a week.
I feel really bad now.
But Aberdeen...especially aberdeenshire is lovely in parts with nice beaches etc...
I assume you have never been but are just being idiotic....
+Aberdeen are most likely going to be in with a shout of europe every season, have a new stadium and training complex on the way and a new rich investor
Sunderland have been a riot for a decade...
If players are any good the big clubs would be in for them?
So there's never been any decent players outside the top 4 teams in any league then?
Newcastle are championship level with the odd 1 or 2 years in the top flight?
They have spent 22 of the 25 premier league years in the top flight.
.
Not liking them is fair enough.
Outright lying just makes you look foolish.
There has been speculation about other players - when you look at the business that Huddersfield have been doing i would be worried if a few more class players did not arrive.
Newcastle and its fans deserve better. But maybe until the vomiting Chairman sells it won't happen.Need a Sheik
McInnes did go down for talks, but chose to stay with Aberdeen. He's always been up front and honest in his talking over the years, he calls it how he sees it. This was no different. I'm not stupid enough to think that he will stay with us forever.
He will go on to bigger and better things than Aberdeen in the future, and bigger and better than Sunderland as well.
