Diego Rolan could make Fulham wait until the last days of the transfer window to sign him as he holds out for a move to the Premier League or Spain.
Sky Sports News understands the striker is still unsure about joining the Championship club despite visiting their training ground twice.
Sky sources reported last week that Fulham had agreed a £5m deal with Bordeaux to sign the 24-year-old but talks with the player have so far proved unsuccessful.
No serious offer has yet emerged for Rolan from the top flight but reports in the north east have claimed Newcastle are interested.
The Uruguay international has scored 37 goals in over 100 appearances for Bordeaux. He has played 23 times for his country, scoring four goals.
Fulham remain determined to sign a striker this summer and are also interested in Norwich forward Cameron Jerome.
