Muhamed Besic took his place in Everton's matchday squad against Chelsea a day after his father was shot, Ronald Koeman has confirmed.

The 24-year-old came on as a half-time substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, despite learning of the incident in Serbia the day before.

Koeman spoke to German-born Besic, a Bosnia and Herzegovina international, on Saturday and insisted it was the player's decision to be involved in the game against Chelsea.

"I spoke to him and he said he is ready, committed, after the game we will talk to the family and see what he needs to do," said Koeman, after confirming reports Besic's father was shot this weekend are true.

"It's always the decision of the player. It's a family question, he showed commitment and of course he spoke to his family [about] what happened."

Koeman also confirmed Besic may now take time off to visit his family following the shooting.
