Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been charged with violent conduct following an incident involving West Ham's Manuel Lanzini.

Mitrovic appeared to catch Lanzini with an elbow during Newcastle's 3-0 win over the Hammers on Saturday.

The Serbia international has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge.

A Football Association statement said: "Aleksandar Mitrovic has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"The Newcastle United forward was involved in an incident with West Ham United's Manuel Lanzini in the 80th minute of the game on Saturday.

"He has until 6pm on 30 August 2017 to respond to the charge."

Former referee Dermot Gallagher analysed the incident for Sky Sports and correctly predicted that Mitrovic was set to face retrospective punishment.

Did Mitrovic elbow Lanzini?

Gallagher said: "I think Mitrovic was very lucky Saturday, but he won't be so lucky today.

"This is a red card. It's like Marko Arnautovic's last week and it would not surprise me if he got a phone call asking for his observations."

Having escaped punishment following the clash with Lanzini, Mitrovic went on to score the final goal of the game, rounding off a first Premier League win of the season for the Magpies.
