Ipswich have begun the process of finding a new manager but they are nowhere near making a decision on who will replace Mick McCarthy, Sky Sports News understands.
McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor left the club with immediate effect following the 1-0 home win over Barnsley earlier this month.
The 59-year-old had been due to leave the Sky Bet Championship club at the end of the season but quit his post four games early.
McCarthy said at the time: "I spoke with Marcus (Evans, owner) at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now.
"I said I would see the season out but it's been a new experience and it's not one I have been enjoying to be honest."
Bryan Klug took over as caretaker manager and will remain in charge until the end of the season.
Evans has made it clear he will not be rushed into a permanent appointment and it is understood a decision may not be made until the middle of May at the earliest.
There have been reports that Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have been sounded out but Sky Sports News understands the names being mentioned in the media are pure speculation at this stage.
Klug, who was the club's head of coaching and player development, took charge for the first time last Saturday when Ipswich lost 2-1 at Nottingham Forest.
The club are 12th in the Championship with three games remaining. They play Aston Villa at Portman Road next Saturday before travelling to Reading a week later.
They finish the season at home to Middlesbrough on May 6.
