Tottenham 2017/18 Premier League season review

Tottenham striker Harry Kane with manager Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham finished the 2017/18 Premier league season in third place, booking a spot next year's Champions League.

Read on for our season review, complete with expert analysis from Soccer Saturday pundit Matt Le Tissier.

Finishing position: 3rd (-1)
Total points: 77 (-9)
FA Cup: Semi-finals
Carabao Cup: Fourth round
Top scorer: Harry Kane (30)

It was always going to be difficult for Tottenham to match last year's 86-point second-place finish at Wembley, but a third consecutive campaign in the top four ensures they can look forward to Champions League football in their new home next season.

There was disappointment in the cup competitions - not least the Champions League, where they surrendered a commanding position against Juventus in the last-16 - but they overcame a late-season wobble in the Premier League to clinch their top-four place with a game to spare.

Mauricio Pochettino's key players delivered again. Harry Kane scored 30 Premier League goals, while Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Heung Min-Son also made vital contributions. At the other end, Tottenham finished the season with the third-best defensive record in the division despite the prolonged absences of Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose.

MATT LE TISSIER'S VERDICT

Managerial review

Given the fact that they've been away from White Hart Lane, I think anywhere in the top four should be considered a success. I know they finished second last season but I think that given the circumstances, it should go down as a good season. They can now look forward to moving to their new stadium on a good platform.

Player of year

I've been impressed by Jan Vertonghen, who has been solid at the back and hasn't made many mistakes. However, it's difficult not to give it to somebody who has scored close to 30 goals so I'm going with Harry Kane for his consistent scoring again. Eriksen has been a fantastic as well. Son has gone off the boil a bit lately but he is worthy of a mention too.

2018/19 prospects?

I think they'll need a bit of investment to compete for the title next season. It would take a huge jump to win it from 20 points behind the league winners. They will look to improve on their points tally, and if that puts them in the title race then that would be a nice thing, but they need a trophy. There are only three up for grabs and you need a bit of luck to win one.
