Rangers have completed the signing of Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley on a deal until the end of the season.

McAuley, 38, has been a free agent since leaving West Bromwich Albion in the summer following their relegation from the Premier League.

He played 12 times last term, having been a regular in his previous six season with the Baggies.

The former Ipswich centre-back has 79 caps and played at Euro 2016.

"The opportunity to come and play at this famous club is amazing," McAuley told RangersTV.

"My family support the club, myself as well. The street I was born on, the kerbs were painted red, white and blue."

McAuley, who also played for Lincoln City and Leicester, aims to pass on his considerable experience once he joins up with Steven Gerrard's squad after the international break.

"There's a young group of players here," he said. "I want to help develop them and also challenge them to play in the team.

"Speaking to the manager in the last week or so, that's something I can bring to the project."
