Joyce spent 12 years as a coach at the club and in 2008 was co–manager of the reserves alongside Solskjaer.

He helped bring through Pogba during his first spell at United and the £89million ($A162m) World Cup winner still holds him in high regard.

Joyce is favourite to succeed Ricky Sbragia who was sacked as under–23’s manager three week’s ago.

But his presence given his warm relationship with Pogba could be crucial to Solskjaer’s hopes of keeping the World Cup hero with Juventus and Real Madrid lining up to do battle for him.

Joyce is also credited for having a big say in the development of the likes of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Michael Keane and Danny Welbeck.

The 54-year-old left to coach Wigan Athletic in 2016 before taking charge of City in the A-League.

Joyce was well known at United for creating a strict work ethic amongst younger players — the sort of commitment and hard labour Solskjaer is calling for from a squad won only two of their last 12 games last season.

He stresses: “You have to have that value system and a certain kind of attitude about you to make a United player.

“There has to be the right culture at the club – and that is what I am determined to create.”
